This series, from AM Audio Media out of Canada, is probably single best amateur/fan made Doctor Who audio drama series in history. This is quite simply excellent, and I love this series. It is one of the best Doctor Who series ever told on audio, frankly. It pulls off the long-awaited Doctor Who/Sherlock Holmes crossover by telling a terrifying story of death and redemption.
Andrew Chalmers stars as a British Canadian Doctor Who, with the excellent Roy Miranda as Sherlock Holmes, who happens to not wear a hat. This story is called “Dark Journey” for a reason. This is supposed to be the Doctor in his final incarnation facing his ultimate death in a terrifying horror story that combines all the best of Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and of course The Ripper. The acting is simply excellent and this was a joy to listen to.
I would have to rate this little production “R” because it involves some very adult themes. Not for little kids, most likely. It reminds me of some of the best of the last series with Lucy Miller dying at the end of the EDAs, actually. It is bleak and dark, but it still has great humor as Holmes and The Doctor play off each other perfectly. This Holmes is an unapologetic drug addict who quickly becomes the Doctor’s BFF. The Doctor can’t keep whimsical together in this dark little series, but he is a highly likable version of the Doctor, despite his slight Canadian accent.
AM Audio Media is rather famous for this series. They have been struggling to release the follow up to this series, which is going to be called Dark Odyssey and have a black American Doctor, as well as another series of Doctor Who: Dark Journey.
If you enjoy this series, PLEASE support this little publishing company from Canada at http://amaudiomedia.com. I am certain that any open minded Doctor Who fan will love this brief series of plays, of which my only complaint is that it is only about 3 hours long in total.
Please ENJOY Dark Journey, and get the best of Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and a good old Victorian horror story. I admit that some of the fan stuff I put up is not that great, but this really is. I give it a solid 9 out of 10.
ENJOY!

If anyone is making people not want to upload things, it’s you, soul30. Nobody wants to reward the whinging mutt with what they want.

To anyone who doesn’t think the fan made stuff is good. Watch the video of The alternative Empire on youtube. If you don’t think it totally awesome and take your words back id me surprised.

Logic is not your friend, Soul. If anyone was annoyed at smythers’ fanfic uploads, they’d be more, rather than less, likely to rush to upload BBC/BF productions. And, as smythers points out, he’s the one doing all the heavy lifting on that, too. So why not go and do something more productive with your time; I don’t find all of this stuff interesting either, but I have no problem with it being here…

So, I took your recommendation and gave this a listen. (Don’t usually do fan-made audios, as I barely have time for all the professional and licensed product.)
A very strong effort, very high production values. Nice use of weaving in TV series extracts and music.
I had a lot of trouble with the performances, many of which fell flat for me, especially Holmes, which was, at best, perfunctory and delivered with little passion.

This series is the best audio production of Doctor Who I’ve ever heard.
It has drama, wit and suspense and understands what it is where as much of the licensed content doesn’t even seem to get sometimes. It has that unexplainable ‘Doctor Who feel’ to it. The portrayal of The Doctor is classic as much as new Who with something truly original thrown in as well. Holmes is very, very close to the version of him in the books and classic black and white films, played with a real gravitas lacking in other adaptations.
The story moves at a break neck pace and you never grow tired of listening to the main characters nor the smaller ones who pop up every few scenes. The sound design is of the highest quality and the music which I just downloaded from the AM Audio site is breath taking.
An absolute 10 out of ten and highly recommend to any casual or hard core Doctor Who fan. Many thanks for uploading !

Thanks for sharing!
After listening to the first episode I was hooked. While the story is suspenseful and funny in places the sound design alone could keep you listening. The voices are clear, the atmosphere sounds are realistic and the music in the second series is perfectly composed.
I will have to check out their other little clips and comedy bits now that I know about them.

I’m so glad people generally liked this! I thought it was just so good. It was dark and suspenseful. Yes, it had that amazing “Doctor Who” feel to it like my favorite episodes like Caves of Androzoni or The Library. This company just got that Doctor Who feel, they did.
I quite liked the portrayal of Holmes. It was quite in line with some of the better portrayals out there. He wasn’t overstated but still highly eccentric. His chemistry with the Doctor was so natural. Two highly flawed geniuses. The Doctor had great chemistry with Emily as well. This was a tortured upset angry Doctor who had seen too many terrible things and really needed his friends. But, the friendship between him and Holmes is entirely believable.
Andrew Chalmers should audition to be the next Doctor after Peter Capaldi sadly retires. He’d be the first British Canadian Doctor! At least he’d still be from the Commonwealth, eh?
I really hope this little company releases Series 3 of Dark Journey soon. I’ve written to them and they are facing some budgeting problems and decided to take the story line in very another direction, but assured me they will be making more episodes.
