Los Angeles, 1950. Red crosscurrents: the commie scare and a string of brutal mutilation killings. Gangland intrigue and Hollywood sleaze. Three cops caught in a hellish web of ambition, perversion, and deceit.
Danny Upshaw is a sheriff’s deputy stuck with a bunch of snuffs nobody cares about; they’re his chance to make his name as a cop…and to sate his darkest curiosities. Mal Considine is DA’s bureau brass. He’s climbing on the Red Scare bandwagon to advance his career and to gain custody of his adopted son, a child he saved from the horror of postwar Europe. Buzz Meeks - bagman, ex-narco goon, and pimp for Howard Hughes - is fighting communism for the money. All three men have purchased tickets to a nightmare.

This makes the 5th upload of this book. Two of the copies are in Ellroy collections. Best collection

True, there are previous uploads, but I read about issues with earlier audio recordings of this book on one of the previous collections Ellroy collections uploaded: https://audiodetectives.com/audio-books/la-quartet-series-req-james-ellroy/
“Sampled a bit of each recording. Most of them are fine, 48-64kbps, but The Big Nowhere is only 32kbps and sounds a little poor. None of these are new recordings that appear on Audible website though. Maybe his books are not as good as I think?”
“…also just curious if anyone has a another copy of the big nowhere?”
And in both of these James Ellroy compilations, it’s the same exact copy of The Big Nowhere that members had issues with. As well, neither of the two other uploads of The Big Nowhere are the audible release. I put up the Audible release, because members asked for it.

Suggestion–When replacing a flawed book, note that in comments to avoid people like me. Checked the one in question, it is a recording for the deaf. I found I have a copy of the Jason Culp recording. I got it from Overdrive.
Ellroy is one of those haunted souls. His mother was murdered in 1958 (unsolved) and this influences his writing. He is not an easy read.

No worries. Thanks for letting me know that. I will do so in the future. I didn’t even think about it when I uploaded the copy. I remember reading The Black Dahlia for the first time, shortly after it came out, and being blown away. Then there was The Big Nowhere and L.A. Confidential (although I preferred the movie), and I couldn’t get into White Jazz. Thanks again.
