This is often considered Brand’s best, and one of the all-time greatest locked room mysteries / impossible crimes. (Though personally I was not so keen on it; I find Brand a bit too spitefully misanthropic to be a very enjoyable read, and the presentation of so many false solutions to be numbing.) Supposedly it was kept off a “Best Of”-list of the genre, voted on by international authors and reviewers, only because the French translator hadn’t understood the ending and so replaced it with his own, inferior solution!
